International wing shooting writer Stuart Williams wrote, " Chuck Ross
claims to offer to his guests, the finest group of working retrievers in the
country. Based on my experience, he is right."
Ask the more than three thousand guests that have hunted over these
wonderful animals and you will find the highlight of their ScatterGun
experience is indeed the ScatterGun Retrievers. In 1962 Chuck Ross ran his
first field trial. His love and admiration for the Labrador retriever
continued to grow over the years as he developed the now legendary
ScatterGun Retrievers.
Unlike most lodges, ScatterGun owns each and every one of their dogs and
every one of them is a Labrador retriever. The number one reason the Lab is
the most popular breed in the United States (by a large margin) is that they
are social. Not just a little social a lot social. That is why from eight
weeks old, they’re not just hunting dogs, they are a member of someone’s
family. Nine months a year being a pet and three months being a hunting
machine. For a Lab life does not get much better than that.
All of the ScatterGun Retrievers are trained at Oakridge Kennels, in
Northfield Minnesota. Owned and operated by Tom Dokken, renowned to be one
of the best gun dog trainers in the country. Each and every dog is given the
best of the best when it comes to training to be a real star in the field
and at home.
The ScatterGun foster home program has been an incredible success since day
one. Jason Smith, the Editor of “Just Labs” magazine, wrote in a recent
article entitled, “The Scattering Labs of ScatterGun Lodge, “ If we have
proven anything”, Chuck wrote to me when we emailed back and forth about
this article, “it is that the old adage, “You can’t have a great gun dog and
a pet at the same time”, is completely false. They are, in fact better when
they can do both.”
And with the scattering Labs of Scattergun lodge there are a lot of families
who are very grateful for that.”
The thrill of watching these incredible dogs doing what they were bred to do
is truly the single greatest highlight of the ScatterGun experience. Their
desire to please never ends and the incredible memories of your hunt with
them will never end either.
